Where to begin when organizing your master bedroom closet? When I decide to organize a space, it forces myself to go through what things can I get rid of. I tend to hold onto things longer than I should. It’s a tough skill to master… for me at least. I always think, I MAY need this SOME DAY.
Declutter and clean your space.
I recommend going through your closet to get rid of any clothes or items that you no longer need or want. After I purge things that I don’t need, it makes organizing it that much easier. What I thought was overwhelming, seems much more manageable now that it has been condensed. You can now remove everything from the closet that allows you to have an empty canvas. Now is the time to clean your closet. An empty closet will be the only time you can clean it thoroughly.
Layout your design.
Here is what I like to do:
Figure out how you like to organize your clothes. Some people like to organize by color or by season or casual vs fancy. Choose what makes the most sense within your day-to-day life. I work from home so my “work clothes” have become more smaller than it used to be, and my casual clothes are much larger than it used to be.
If you have a lot of T-shirts that you rather fold than hang up, they have really nice hanging shelfs with 4-5 compartments. These are great for casual women’s or men’s T-shirts. You can also use these compartments for jeans.
If you have a lot of belts, or scarfs, you can put them into clear containers and stack them. If you have a lot of hanging space, I like the hangers that can hold 10 scarfs or the belt hangers. It all depends on the space in your closet.
If you are out of room, a shoe rack on the door is handy. If you have shelf space, shoe racks can go on the ground or on your upper shelf. For hats I hang up on any empty space.
Keeping it organized.
The most important piece of this task you may have just embarked on, it is staying on top of it. It can be very easy to fall back into a rut of keeping everything. What I do is just go through my clothes every few months. Sometimes I laugh at some pieces that I had to keep 3 months ago to have no issues getting rid of now. Like I’ve said, I’m a working progress.
